The required power for a single-family home is determined from the sum of the installed capacity. The standard assumes a power requirement of 14.5 KW for a residential unit with standard building technology. Most homeowners with pure residential needs opt for 3,000 to 4,000 watts to ensure basic supplies during a power outage. If the emergency power generator is to supply other or several devices at the same time, 5,000 to 7,500 watts are appropriate.
It is recommended to secure a bridging period of at least 72 hours to compensate for power outages. In this way, sensitive electrical equipment can be protected from voltage and frequency fluctuations that can cause considerable damage.
